چکیده

Introduction Speech prosody refers to melodic or suprasegmental features of an utterance (e.g., pitch) that may signal a variety of linguistic and paralinguistic functions (Lehiste, 1996). Over the last quarter century, increasing attention has been focused on the roles of the left (LH) and right (RH) cerebral hemispheres in the processing of prosodic information. Evidence has been steadily accumulating in the dichotic listening (Shipley-Sabin, 2002) literature implicating the RH in the perception of prosodic units assigned to phrase-and sentence-level structures. data from tone languages point to LH and RH lateralization, respectively, for tonal and affective information. This article presents an overview of research findings from positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies on the perception of Chinese speech prosody (see Buckner & Logan, 2001; Rugg, 1999, for tutorials on haemodynamic methods of brain imaging).

A cross-linguistic fMRI study of perception of intonation and emotion in Chinese.

Conflicting data from neurobehavioral studies of the perception of intonation (linguistic) and emotion (affective) in spoken language highlight the need to further examine how functional attributes of prosodic stimuli are related to hemispheric differences in processing capacity. Because of similarities in their acoustic profiles, intonation and emotion permit us to assess to what extent hemisp...

Speaking Rate Effects on Discourse Prosody in Standard Chinese

What is the prosodic mechanism of faster or slower discourse speech? This paper focuses on observing the effects of speech rate on discourse prosody of Standard Chinese speech with fast, normal and slow speech rates. The investigation in discourse prosody structure demonstrates that the speaking rate effects on discourse prosody are nonlinear and need careful manipulations.

An Example-based Approach for Prosody Generation in Chinese Speech Synthesis

Prosody generation is an important issue in text to speech system. We present in this paper an example-based approach for prosody generation in mandarin Chinese speech synthesis. The general idea is that we are trying to get the prosodic information from real speech examples. We first analyze given Chinese text, and form a linguistic feature vector, which describes the phonetic and lexicon char...

Using prosody database in Chinese speech synthesis

As the difficulty of revealing the relationship between text and prosody, a corpus based approach is used in prosody generation in the research. A prosody database is built as templates for prosody generation. The general idea is that we are trying to get the prosodic information from real speech examples. We first analyze given Chinese text, and form a linguistic feature vector, which describe...

Speech Rate and Prosody Units: Evidence of Interaction from Mandarin Chinese

This paper discusses evidence of interaction found between speech rate and prosody units in Mandarin Chinese speech. Mandarin speech data of 2 different speech rates that had been previously labeled for perceived boundaries and prosody units were further analyzed for duration patterns at each prosodic level. Each prosody level demonstrated patterns of duration adjustment for both speech rates t...
